Diamonds are a symbol of gracefulness and elegance, with their color being one of the major factors that contribute to their overall worth. Our diamonds at RareCarat, including hidden halo designs which are in high demand, are carefully assessed for their color to make sure that you will get the highest return on your investment. Understanding different grades of diamond color can assist you when buying a diamond.
The Diamond Color Grading Scale
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) classifies diamonds on a scale from D through Z based on their color. Each letter ascribes a range of colors where D is totally free from any coloration while Z has some noticeable shade.
D-F: Colorless
D Grade: This is completely devoid of any taint and is graded as having the highest possible color rating for these stones. It’s incredibly rare and expensive.
E Grade: Almost clear with only very few hints of color that can only be spotted by an expert gemmologist.
F Grade: Little color but still classified as being colorless; it’s top quality and valuable.
G-J: Near Colorless
G Grade: Small traces of color that may be compared against higher colors grades.
H Grade: Slightly more coloured than G but equally fantastic for quality.
I Grade: Noticeable inclusions but looks almost clear to untrained eyes still appearing without hue
J Grade: There is perception of little yellowish tint although it’s still reasonable price for large diamonds
K-M: Faint Color
K Grade: Weak yellow or brownish hue which becomes more visible in larger stones.
L Grade: Just slightly more visible than K grade.
M Grade: Obscured color which might be particularly evident in larger gems.
N-R: Very Light Color
Stones within this group have got a faint yellow or brown hue, visible without magnification
S-Z: Light Color
In the case of this range, diamonds often get a little hue that can affect their brilliance and value.
Choosing the Right Diamond Color
In choosing a diamond, consider what you put first. If you want to own the purest and colorless diamond possible, then go for D-F grade. However, if you are looking for something that is high quality but still fairly priced then G-J graded diamonds provide an excellent compromise between quality and cost. On the other hand, K-M grades would allow budget-conscious consumers to purchase bigger stones at more affordable prices.
At RareCarat our experts will help you find your ideal gemstone as well as various types of diamonds that differ in color grade so they suit anyone who wants to buy them.
